Choosing the Right Dry Food: Flake, Pellet, or Wafer?
Flake, pellet, and wafer each suit different fish. Here is how to match dry food to your tank — and how to use it to gut-load feeders for maximum nutrition.

Dry food is the backbone of most aquarium diets and the easiest way to gut-load feeders. But flake, pellet, and wafer are not interchangeable — the right form depends on where your fish feed and how big their mouths are.
Flake — top and mid-water community fish
Flake floats then slowly sinks, making it perfect for guppies, mollies, tetras, and other community fish that feed near the surface. A color-enhancing flake rich in krill and spirulina deepens reds and blues without artificial dyes — and it is the easiest food to gut-load feeders on.
Pellets — growth and bigger appetites
Slow-sinking micro pellets pack more protein per bite and hold their shape, which keeps the water clean. They are ideal for growing out fry, conditioning breeders, and feeding bettas, dwarf cichlids, and nano predators between live meals.
Wafers — bottom dwellers
Corydoras, plecos, loaches, and shrimp are easy to starve in a busy tank. Fast-sinking wafers reach the bottom intact and hold together for hours so grazers can feed at their own pace.
The simplest rule
Feed variety. Use a quality flake or pellet as the staple, rotate in a spirulina/veggie food a few times a week, and always gut-load feeders on a fortified formula before offering them.

What are you feeding?
No single food is complete. Rotating two or three forms is the cheapest insurance against the deficiencies that shorten fish lives.

Frequently asked questions
What dry food is best for guppies?
A quality color-enhancing flake as the staple, with a spirulina flake rotated in a few times a week.
Can I gut-load feeders with regular flake?
Yes, but a fortified formula does it better. See our gut-loading guide for the 48-hour routine.
Do bottom feeders need special food?
They do — fast-sinking wafers reach them before mid-water fish eat everything first.
